Our Favorite Podcasts & Blogs

By Kali Whitaker

At Hilltop, we are big fans of podcasts and blogs – this is a golden age for content, with a virtually infinite variety of topics and perspectives available.  A client recently suggested we share our listening (and reading) list, and we figured now is a great time to share.  We hope you’ll find something to pass the time during a flight home for the holidays or on your evening commutes in 2018.

 Rusty Eriksen -

Planet Money – A twice weekly podcast explaining what’s happening in the economy with levity.  As Planet Money says, “Imagine you could call up a friend and say, ‘Meet me at the bar and tell me what's going on with the economy.’ Now imagine that's actually a fun evening. That's what we're going for at Planet Money.”

Given the current debate about tax code changes, here’s a podcast with five economists spanning the ideological spectrum discussing six tax code changes they’d all support.  https://www.npr.org/sections/money/2012/07/19/157047211/six-policies-economists-love-and-politicians-hate

Revisionist History – New York Times bestselling author Malcom Gladwell discusses an event, person, or idea from the past.  He’s an engaging story teller that will leave you new ideas to ponder.

 Chris Hostetler -

EconTalk – Each week, economist Russ Roberts interviews a writer, economist or philosopher on a wide array of big ideas.  Always a respectful debate featuring diverse viewpoints, and I always feel smarter for listening.  A recent favorite episode was 8/28/17, Benedict Evans on the Future of Cars.

Carolina Insider Podcast – All things UNC sports, with a healthy dose of goofiness and opinion hosted by Jones Angell, the voice of the Tar Heels, and writer Adam Lucas.  They make me feel like I’m in the room with them, talking about the teams that I love.  If you’re a Heels fan, how can you justify not listening?

 Ben Yeager -

Financial Advisors Success – Industry expert Michael Kitces interviews some of the most successful financial advisors and leading industry consultants about how to take a financial advisory business to the next level.

Hangin’ With The Boys – Former Dallas Cowboy Nate Newton and friends discuss the latest Cowboys news and events.

 Brittany Mollica -

theSkimm – A daily newsletter email that is sent out each morning and gives a quick update on all the big news stories of the day.  It breaks down each story and explains tough concepts in relatable and easy to understand ways.  If nothing else, I read this every morning before work!

Money Under 30 – After learning about this blog from a former professor, I enjoy the blog’s helpful & easy to understand tips for college students and those who are early in their career. The site also offers a weekly newsletter that helps me stay informed while on the go, easy and convenient.

 Dawn Black -

The Minimalist Baker -  A Portland, OR based husband and wife team offering simple, one-bowl plant-based recipes that can be whipped up in 30 minutes or less. This blog combines two of my favorite things – food and photography.  Their recipes are straight-forward and quick to prepare, and the photography is amazing.  They even offer a food photography school.
